What is a pH meter?
A pH meter is a sensitive electronic scientific instrument, designed to measure the hydrogen-ion activity in a liquid or a water-based solution. It measures the pH level expressed on a pH scale from 0 to 14. A liquid with a pH level of 7 is considered to be neutral. A liquid with a pH below 7 is considered to be Acidic and a liquid with a pH above 7 is considered to be Basic.
The pH meter has a porous glass electrode and is filled with a reference liquid. The pH meter measures the difference in electrical potential between the glass pH electrode and the reference electrode. The difference in electrical potential is a voltage that can be translated into a pH level.
Today the most popular pH meter is the Digital pH meter. It is easy to use and easy to calibrate, making it the most popular device to measure pH today. There are other methods to measure pH. For example you can use pH strips or pH testing strips but they are not so accurately. Another method is using a pH electrode connected to a pH meter or pH monitor. The results are very accurate, but this method to measure pH is more expensive because and is therefore often used in laboratories worldwide.
